Testing
Testing continues to play an important part in our response to COVID-19.
If you’re symptomatic, please stay at home and get a test.
If you’re unsure whether or not to get a test, please contact your health professional or Health on 0800 358 5453 and follow advice.
If you test positive for COVID-19, you are required to isolate for 7 days. You do not need to be retested after your initial positive result. If you still have symptoms after 7 days, stay home until you feel better and then wait another 24 hours.
Your household contacts should also stay at home, have tests at day 3 and 7 or if they develop symptoms.

Get vaccinated

Changes to self-isolation take effect tonight
- From 11.59pm today, Friday 11 March, the isolation period for anyone that tests positive and their household contacts will reduce from 10 to seven days.
- Household Contacts will need to have a rapid antigen test at day 3 and day 7 of their isolation period. If they become symptomatic they should also get a test, and if the result is positive, they are required to isolate for seven days from that point.
- Recovered cases will no longer need to self-isolate if they become a household contact within 90 days after having the virus. This is an increase from the current 28 days.
Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs)
- RATs can be pre-ordered online to pick-up or 0800 222 478, option 3.
- Please record your RAT result, even if it's negative, at: My COVID Record or 0800 222 478, option 3.
- If you are a household contact please report your RATs results separately.
- The self-reporting of RATs helps us understand transmission within households and how the outbreak is spreading through communities.

Rapid antigen tests to be available in St Arnaud and Tapawera
- Rapid antigen tests (RATs) will be available for pick up on select days/times over the next few weeks in St Arnaud and Tapawera, starting tomorrow Friday 11 March.
- If you are eligible for a free test (see criteria below) you can pre-order a RAT online to pick-up: https://requestrats.covid19.health.nz or by calling 0800 222 478, option 3.

Who can get a free test?
A COVID-19 test is free if you:
- have COVID-19 symptoms
- are a Household Contact of a confirmed case
- are a critical worker and need a test to go to work
- are part of the healthcare and emergency service workforce
- require a test for domestic travel or to attend court
- do a job where mandatory testing applies
- have been told to get one by a health professional.
