NMH COVID-19 Update: 9 April 2020
This update provides information about confirmed cases in the Nelson Marlborough region, community-based assessment centre (CBAC) data and any new information for our communities.

1. Total confirmed cases in the Nelson Marlborough region
Two new probable cases in the Nelson Marlborough region have been announced by the Ministry of Health (MoH). They are:
- A Nelson female in her 60s (her case dates back to 24 March)
- A Marlborough female in her 40s

- All cases are travel-related and there is no evidence of a community outbreak in the region
- All cases are in isolation at home or in their place of usual residence.
- There are no cases in hospital.

2. Updated probable case definition
The definition of a probable case was recently revised by the Ministry of Health.
In simple terms a probable case is someone where the suspicion of disease is so high that the clinicians believe this is more than likely a case than not but cannot prove this by lab testing.
There are three ways that someone is diagnosed as a probable COVID-19 case:
- They have clinically-compatible symptoms, and an absence of other known causes that would explain why they have clinical symptoms
- They are a close contact of a confirmed case, and either meet the clinical criteria or cannot readily be tested
- The clinician assessing them believes that, based on clinical symptoms, an inconclusive test or no test, and their exposure history, that they are very likely to be a case.
3. Recovery rates
As at 9 April 2020, the total number of people who have recovered from COVID-19 in the Nelson Marlborough region is: 14 (please note, this was incorrectly reported as 16 yesterday).
The recovery rate is a subset of the total number of confirmed cases.
