Soggy Start for Hawkins Construction
Following from the Turning of the Sod ceremony, the Hawkins team quickly commenced site preparation works including earthworks, installing access roads and erecting fencing around the construction site. During the heavy rain, site preparation was halted and the newly excavated site mirrored more of a lake than the new foundations for a hospital. Despite the weather, Martin Edwards, Project Manager for Hawkins considered that the project was still running on track and commented “that a real sense of the size and shape of the footprint is becoming apparent” The next couple of weeks will see the site develop the hard base from which the foundations will rise and around mid August (subject to sign off by the Health Minister) the underslab drainage and concrete will begin to track across the site towards the current Emergency Department. Turning of the Sod Ceremony Turning of the sod Ceremony and Site Blessing was held on the 23rd of July. Acting Board Chair, Liz Richards, Retired Surgeon and Board Member John Inder and nine year old Kowhai Millan - Ratima took part in the first 'sod turning'. Speeches were given by Mayor Alistair Sowman and Nelson Marlborough Chief Executive, John Peters. The Karakia was given by Joe Pukatapu, and blessings by Kaumatua Graeme Grenell and Chaplain Kevin Gwynne. The ceremony marks the commencement of the redevelopment project with enabling and site preparation works underway. Hawkins had a wet start to their initial enabling works contract in preparing the site for construction in July.
